CBM works with persons with disabilities, their families, local partner organisations, alliance partners including UN agencies, global organisations, and Disabled Persons’ Organisations (DPOs).

CBM has been involved from the outset with “VISION 2020: The Right to Sight”, a global initiative with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) to eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2020, and other global initiatives such as the provision of affordable hearing aids, education for all and community mental health.

CBM is also recognised as a collaborating organisation by the World Health Organization (WHO) and has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Together with its partner organisations, CBM is active in more than 670 projects in 65 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and in 2013, reached more than 24 million people.

CBM’s International Office in Bensheim, Germany, is accepting applications for

Ophthalmologist and Senior Lecturer

Location: Goroka and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG)

Contract Duration: 2 years

Contract Start: As soon as possible

Objective

The position holder contributes to the reduction of the cataract backlog in PNG, and provides quality eye surgical services. In her/his capacity as Senior Lecturer at the University of PNG, s/he plays a key role in developing and implementing the postgraduate training programme in ophthalmology. Reporting to the Regional Director South East Asia and Pacific Regional Office, a close working relationship will be established with the CBM Country Coordinator in PNG.

Main Tasks

 Provision of Medical Services

 

  • Prepares and reviews case histories of cataract surgeries
  • Determines procedures for pre-and postoperative care
  • Schedules and performs eye surgeries
  • Examines, diagnoses and treats eye diseases and injuries
  • Implements cataract surgical outcome monitoring at the Goroka Eye Hospital in cooperation with the Prevention of Blindness Programme (PBP), in Port Moresby
  • Provides quality medical eye care including improvement of referral pathways to refraction and CBR services
  • Maintains the operations of the Goroka Eye Clinic and the mobile surgical team supporting surgical services

 Training and Lecturing

 

  • Builds and develops local capacities to reduce dependency on foreign experts for medical eye care services
  • Trains and mentors national ophthalmologists and selected paramedical staff to facilitate eye medical care in different provinces
  • Leverages training in eye care as Senior Lecturer for undergraduate medical students and postgraduate medical registrars in ophthalmology under the umbrella of the University of PNG

 

Management and External Relations

 

  • Responsible for the identification of local resources for project management
  • Plans and administers the annual project budget, submitting reports that comply with CBM and other donor requirements
  • Represents CBM and the Congregation of Christian Brothers in eye medical conferences and other related eye programmes in the country

 

Professional Profile and Requirements

  • Medical degree with specialization in ophthalmology
  • Professional license and accreditation with medical board
  • Proven surgical track record
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in community eye health, preferably in the development sector and in an under-developed community
  • Strong work experience with local partners and in coordinating with diverse stakeholders from different backgrounds (government, other NGOs, community) in order to sustain the programme for the long term
  • Experience in training and lecturing medical students in the field of ophthalmology
  • Experience in building capacity and empowering local counterparts
  • Experience in programme/project management
  • Excellent knowledge of English both orally and in writing
